Restaraunts in Florence

A few remarks: There are hundreds of restaurants in Florence, from small restaurants where you can eat typical Tuscan food for less than 30,000 lire, to exclusive places where you can experience the best of Italian and International cuisine but where the bill can easily exceed 100,000 lire (per person!) by a considerable amount. Generally, the average quality is good, but there are also tourist traps which must be avoided carefully. As a rule, if you like to taste the traditional local food, it is better to look for inexpensive or moderate priced places. More expensive restaurants (with a few exceptions) tend to go beyond what Florentines are used to eat at home, and are aiming at unusual flavors or more creative dishes. Remember that the secret of Florentine cooking is simplicity and the high quality of the ingredients (olive oil first of all).

It is impossible to list all restaurants in Florence with a first-hand knowledge of them. What we have prepared here is a reduced list (by no means exhaustive) of eating places about which we had good reports or which we experienced ourselves. The list has been organized in four price classes: very expensive, expensive, moderate, and inexpensive. Please note that this classification is purely indicative, since it depends on what you eat and especially on what you drink. A good bottle of wine can easily moves a restaurant up to the next class or, viceversa, you may discover that the place you liked is indeed cheaper than indicated here. Always check the menu at the entrance door to figure out (at least approximately) what you are going to spend.

For a quick lunch, as you are expected to have during the Workshop, you can just forget this list. Otherwise, you will end up inevitably with too much food on your stomach, and less money in your pocket. For lunch, you can have a sandwich in one of the many "paninerie" or "alimentary" shops, or you can just eat a pizza. "Pizzerie" (where you can usually find also other dishes like "pasta" or salads) are also a good choice for dinner, if your budget is limited. Another good choice are Chinese restaurants of which there are dozens in every section of town (just outside Florence, as a matter of fact, there is the largest Chinese community in Italy, working mainly in leather factories). However, with a little effort and the help of this guide, you can find places in Florence where you can eat traditional Tuscan food at the same price or slightly more than in a pizza place or in a fast food or a Chinese restaurant. We strongly encourage you in this search!
